President's Message

Hi All,

It has been very pleasing to see members viewing the course plan and taking the documentation provided for information. Board members indicated that they had received mainly positive feedback re the plan but importantly all members appreciated the information being provided. September has arrived and is going to be a month for some significant activities for the QGC club.

Some will have noticed that tree trimming has occurred as per the course plan:

• Hole 6 the tree removal and trimming to the right of tee opens up the tee shot significantly
• Hole 8 the path and bunker now are visible from the tee completely and definitely in play
• Hole 17 the tree removal and trimming has opened up the tee shot and the 2 bunkers and area to the right of the green. In addition we should not have frost on the 17th green all day when we have a frost.

Green Options have been engaged and commenced the upgrade of all Par 3 tees which is scheduled for completion by September 24 and to be in play for the 1st round of the Club championships October 26.

QPRC notification for the closure of Brown St is scheduled for 11 September.

We met with a representation from the Deputy Premier Mr Barilaro’s office this month, to progress a grant application. This was well received and is a work in progress of which we are very hopeful for a favourable outcome.

Other initiatives being pursued by your Board include:

• New Club Signage to include Cantle Cottage memorial
• 2 Day Pro Am scheduled for 16/17 March 2020. This year’s event to include some extra items in the agenda which will be confirmed and communicated soon.
• Initial discussions re the 2020 National Boys Championships with Golf Australia

Course renovations are complete, spring has arrived and it is now time to get player ready for some of our major events - Club Championships, Mixed Championships, Queanbeyan Cup, and Volkswagen Scramble to name a few.

For the past two weekends we changed the program, the opportunity to have non handicap events and a little bit of fun. For the first time an Irish Fourball last Saturday and the comments were very positive and players suggested we should repeat this next year. The overall scoring was interesting with best team result 100 pts by Peter Elliott, Peter Ingram, Richard Maloney and Steve Clyde-Smith.

The playing of our par threes was exciting for some - 8th Hole just 10 cm from hole for Paul Duthie, 12th just 4cm for Jerry Smith and then 15th a Hole in One for Jason Brown and then on 17th a Hole in One for junior player Brodie Cook visiting with family from Tura Beach.

Club Championships - The most major of our events prior to Christmas will be the Club Championships for both men and women over the weekends of 26th and 27th October and 2nd and 3rd November. Entry forms will be available before end of September.

This coming Saturday will be our special day in memory of Wal Harrison. Fiona Harrison will present a prize to the player with best nett of the day. Pete Harrison will have a group representing family and friends play in first group of afternoon. A number of our players who travel each year to Yarrawonga will play and be at the club later in the day to spend some time to honour the day.

CEO Update

Hello again members.

How good does it feel with the sun on your back again? I trust that everybody has blown the dust off the clubs, and screwed in the annual Spring purchase of a new set of soft spikes?!

The Club’s Board of Management certainly haven’t been in hiding over the winter. There has been a great level of activity “in the background”, including (but not limited to);

• preparing, evaluating and releasing the Golf Course Masterplan
• submitting our application for the closure of Brown Street to QPRC
• sourcing, considering and implementing the Par 3 tee refurbishment program
• developing a Strategic Plan for the Club

With all this activity going on in the Club, the importance of having a strong, cohesive and forward- thinking Board of Management, cannot be overstated. With only around three (3) short months until the AGM, it is vitally important that we ensure that our Board succession planning is well advanced.

With the imminent retirement of a number of Board positions, not the least of which is Life Member Gail Goiser standing down after many years as Club Captain, there has never been a more exciting time for a keen member, to take the step, and stand for a position on the Board of Directors.

To assist members in their decision-making processes, an information night will be conducted in the clubhouse, on Monday 16th September 2019 from 6.00pm. This session will be designed to provide information on what skills are required to become a modern Club Director, and those present, will answer any queries you might have about becoming a Director of Queanbeyan Golf Club.

Spring finally, but first we must mention Monthly Medal winners for August, Fran Miller Saturday 3rd August winner with a nett 70 and Joyce Hotchkis Tuesday's winner with a nett 71.

A number of women ventured away to Bega's Open Day weekend. Saturday was a 4bbb where Kim Watson and her partner were runners-up. Stroke on the Sunday and Sue Taylor won Div 1 nett with 76.

Pauline Jeffery and Fran Miller travelled to beautiful Gundagai for their Open Day, Pauline won the trophy of Overall Scratch Winner, very good effort on a challenging course. The Gundagai course runs along the Murrumbidgee River with beautiful gums and not a bunker anywhere.

Moruya was the next course to have an influx of Queanbeyan women players. Dee Rodgers came 3rd in the nett. Joyce Hotchkis won the longest drive in her division and Lee Maiden a NTP.

RMC had their open day with Liz Smyth coming 2nd and Deb Baker 3rd in the gross. Shirl Weber and Jacqui McMillan were runners up in Div 1 and Div 2 nett respectively. Joyce Hotchkis won the Div 2 gross.

RMC kindly invited us onto their course while Queanbeyan was renovating the greens. Colleen Langi was runner up in Div 1.

Saturday 24 August was a 2 person ambrose and it's good to know that at the age of 89 you can still play well and show up us younguns. Well done Liz Smyth and Marie Flaherty with a healthy 63 3/4 nett.

CSGA 4somes were held at Gold Creek for the last weekend in August with 35 teams supporting our local district association. The only winners from Queanbeyan were Karen Ebsworth and Fran Miller coming 3rd in the nett.

Goulburn had their annual stabrose with 90 players or so from around the district playing. The team of Jacqui McMillan, Deb Baker and Patsy Morgan came in with a healthy 58 to come 2nd overall from a 5 way count back.

First monthly medal for September was won with an impressive 68 nett by Judy Tucker. The field was bigger than normal with some Murrumbidgee women playing our course while their course was being renovated.

As you can see just from this months newsletter our women certainly get around and do a very good job of promoting our club and have a very good idea of what is happening in and around other courses in our district.

Juniors Playing Golf
If you have kids, grandkids, nephews, nieces, kids living next door why not get them into the game of golf its a great way to spend time with them and develop those skills early in life.

Active Kids Vouchers NSW Government
The NSW Government is helping kids get active with the Active Kids program. The Active Kids program provides two $100 vouchers for parents, guardians and carers of school-enrolled children to use towards sport and active recreation costs each year. From 1 July 2019, parents, guardians and carers can apply for the second $100 Active Kids voucher. Voucher 1 is valid January to December and Voucher 2 is valid July to December.

$100 Active Kids voucher, can be used for golf membership through the club or golf tuition through the Pro shop.

Junior Clinics
Reminders there are junior clinics run by our Pro shop at 4.00pm on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month. Mat Rainsford and his side kick Harry Smith put together a fun filled and basic skills clinic, if you have a son, daughter, grandchild, nephew or niece bring them along. - Cost $10.

Sand Buckets

How good are we getting at this?  Really good. 
We have 2 designated areas, near the 8th tee and at the back of the 18th green to put the Sand Buckets after you have finished your round?  Invariably a large percentage of them are left full.  Let's make an effort to:
A) put them in the designated area after each round, and
B) empty them on your last hole that you play as I am sure there are plenty of opportunities to do so. 

Divot Boxes

We could definitely improve in this area as well. Holes 5, 6, 8, 12, 15 and 17 are where we have Divot Boxes placed  to fill in divots made.

If you are playing with someone and they take a divot and don’t fix it, Can you either fix the divot with the sand and seed mix or nicely suggest that they do so. 

Can please make sure you keep the lid closed after use as this stops the seed from germinating inside the box.

Superintendent's Report

Spring is here and renovations completed the greens will be slow for a while longer but are progressing well. They have been mown 3 times and with more frequent mowing and rolling the pace will continue to improve and will be in great shape for the Championships.

The par 3 tees have been cordoned off, commencement of the re-construction process has begun with the spraying out of existing turf completed Monday. Construction in earnest will commence  9 September, involving re-shaping, levelling, installation of more efficient irrigation, amendments to the soil profile, and laying of Santa Anna couch. The growing in period is most important, consequently the tees will be ‘no go zones’ until the championships. Please be patient whilst playing temporary shorter par 3’s, you will be the beneficiaries of this brief period of disruption.

The lack of winter rain indicates we won't have a huge surge in spring growth. Additional irrigation is achieved during non competition days, please be mindful of that need.

Continued thanks to the volunteer groups who continue to devote their spare time in improving our course in many ways.

• Sunday afternoons at 1.45pm for a 2.00pm. No experience needed. No need to book.
• Play 8 holes in an all Beginner Women’s Comp. Cost only $10. Meet and pay at the Pro Shop.
• You will learn about golf in a friendly and non-threatening environment with help to enjoy the game at whatever level you would like.
• If you are only available on another weekday and would like to give golf a go then phone Pauline (see below) and see what can be arranged.
• Professional lessons available from Jake Nagle and his team at the Pro Shop. Ph. 6297 2542. Check for Ladies clinics and packages at affordable prices.
• Membership for women available in all categories. Get a handicap and play in the Women’s competition on Tuesday, Saturday and medley Sundays.
