Needing help

We are moving into the busy part of the year and I need your help. The events are listed below and it would be fantastic if you could give a little of your time to assist on any or all of the days.

Please email, phone or speak to me about the following days when assistance is needed:

1) Sunday 20th October’19 - Regional Final of NSW Ambrose Championships Tee times from 11 am and we need a few spotters and perhaps marshalling as the regional finalists will mostly be from other clubs.

2) Club Championships over the two weekends 26th /27th October and 2nd /3rd November, again spotters, marshalling and assistance in score recording etc.

3) Queanbeyan Cup 26th November if numbers warrant again will need spotters and marshalling.

4) Mixed Foursomes Championship on Saturday 23rd November, a 27 hole event with the need to collect cards at 10th tee after first 18 holes and enter all scores into the two computers required to calculate for the 27 holes.

Pennant 2020 – We have registered teams to compete in A and A Reserve, B Scratch and Juniors for the Sunday competitions and for the Thursdays we will have Masters Scratch and Masters Handicap teams.

It would be great to have another win from our teams and we are asking players who feel they have the right qualifications for any of these teams to firstly contact me either by email or speak to me when I am on duty. I will during the Club Championships have on display lists for expressions of interest.

Club Championships - Entry forms are available on website or call into the club.

Queanbeyan Cup – From mid October notices for this event will be on Club Notice Board, Pro Shop and will be forwarded to all clubs within the district. Members will enter into the competition in the usual way, your visitors and other visitors will need to be entered by the Pro Shop or myself – email or phone.

Mixed Foursomes Championships – Notices will be around soon for this event so our players should start arranging their partners.

Tips from the Tour

VOLKSWAGEN SCRAMBLE

Well what an awesome turn out for our Lennock Volkswagen Scramble, and great to have the weather turn it on too!

This year saw a much tighter knit group up the top of the leader board, with just 2 shots separating our top six teams. However, two teams stood up, Congratulations to our winners, Lachlan de Jongh, Harry de Jongh, Chris de Jongh and David de Jongh who shot a nett score of 53.4. Runners up on a nett score of 53.9 was the team of Tony Innaimo, Alan Mapleson, Josh Reid and Dave Hunter. Both these teams will represent Queanbeyan Golf Club at the regional finals next year!

Also, a huge thankyou to Victor and Peter for putting on the great lunch today, and Kate Bell and her team behind the bar. To Bryan Kelly and his team, Jamie Green and Tom, we can’t wait to see how good the course comes up after the renovations.

Finally, to Lennock Volkswagen, thankyou for your support of the Volkswagen Scramble, especially our event here at Queanbeyan. Sponsors make events like these, and it’s terrific to have you on board!

Jake, Mat, Trent, Lachlan, Jacko and Harry

CEO Update

Hello again members.

Well …. What a little bit of sunshine and a spot of rain will do to a golf course! Thank you Spring!!!

No better time than to build five (5) new teeing grounds, and cover them in over 3000sqm of Santa Anna couch. I am sure you will agree, these new tees are going to look sensational when they open for play on the first round of the Club Championships. A big shout out to the guys from Green Options, who delivered the project ahead of time, and right on budget. Members, please keep off these new areas to allow the turf to knit, over the next three weeks. (As always, your patience will be rewarded)

Commencing this Sunday, the Club will be providing free acoustic entertainers on the balcony, from 4.30pm – 7.30pm. So get your friends and family out of the house, and down to the golfie, for a few relaxing Sunday afternoon “sippers”. Victor and his team will be offering a reduced bar menu during these hours, so come on down and check us out!

With all of these improvements to your member experience, both on and off the course, it is no wonder we have reached the finals of the 2019 NSW Golf Industry Awards, in the following categories;

2019 Golf NSW Country Club of the Year

2019 NSW/ACT PGA Pro-Am of the Year

The awards will be presented in a few weeks’ time (Monday 21st October), so everyone cross your fingers for us to bring home the chocolates!

As always ….. may the breeze be at your back, and every putt be your last!!!

Be Careful After  'MAKING THAT PUTT'

Although putting with the flag in seems to have improved the pace of play, an unintended consequence has been noticed of the edges of the holes incurring more damage.

Golf course staff have noticed golfers inadvertently damaging the edges of the hole with their hand when retrieving the ball with the flagstick in the hole. Other damage has occurred when players try to remove their ball with the flagstick or even inserting their putter alongside the flagstick and causing damage.

Whether the flagstick is in the hole or not, golfers should carefully remove the ball with their hand. Never use the flagstick as a tool to remove the golf ball. Never remove the ball with a retriever attached to a putter without first removing the flagstick.

Women's Captain

To start this month newsletter firstly we must congratulate Liz Smyth for winning Saturday's Monthly Medal in September on a  very windy day 69/77. Jumping ahead a little Liz also attended the Victoria Seniors being held at Barwon Heads and both courses at 13th beach. Liz won her age division in trying conditions, with the wind and the mozzies, I'm not too sure which was worse. If you have ever played these courses you know what I mean. Pauline Jeffery came 6th overall in the women's division, in a field of 60 women.  Why not try your skills, the Vic Seniors will be held at those courses at this time of year for the coming 2 years.

Bermagui had their open day around the same time and a contingent of women attended with Karen Ebsworth winning Div.2.

Sunday 22 September Meg Lynch played at Federal in a sponsors day and had an outstanding 50 points. The last time she played there was in the Emily Hurt Pennant and she had a Hole in 1 on the 16th. Looks like she enjoys playing Federal, let's hope she has no desire to move clubs.

Thursday 26 September Gungahlin Golf Club had their open day with a good field represented from around the district.  Dee Rodgers won the day with 85 gross and came 2nd in the gross for the Vets with Shirl Weber winning Division 1 with a Nett 75.

Tuesday's monthly medal winner for October was Julie McDonnell with a very impressive 99/65 nett. She finally broke 100.  Just pipping Bev Dyer with a 67 nett.

How good are our greens, with championships just around the corner they are going to be slick.

Sand Buckets

How good are we getting at this?  Really good.
We have 2 designated areas, near the 8th tee and at the back of the 18th green to put the Sand Buckets after you have finished your round?  Invariably a large percentage of them are left full.  Let's make an effort to:
A) put them in the designated area after each round, and
B) empty them on your last hole that you play as I am sure there are plenty of opportunities to do so.

Divot Boxes

We could definitely improve in this area as well. Holes 5, 6, 8, 12, 15 and 17 are where we have Divot Boxes placed  to fill in divots made.

If you are playing with someone and they take a divot and don’t fix it, Can you either fix the divot with the sand and seed mix or nicely suggest that they do so.

Can please make sure you keep the lid closed after use as this stops the seed from germinating inside the box.

Membership

A reminder to all Clubhouse and Golfing members that memberships that have not been renewed will need to ASAP to use the Golf Club facilities - unless your Clubhouse Membership is through until 2020 or 2021.

Superintendent's Report

Spring is here and the greens will be in great shape for the Championships. The growth in the fairways has been enormous since the 30 mil of rain a couple of weeks ago and they will continue to improve with the warmer weather.

The par 3 tees have been completed and with the warmer weather and plenty of water will see them be spot on for the  championships. They are ‘no go zone’ until then. Please be patient whilst playing temporary shorter par 3’s, you will be the beneficiaries of this brief period of disruption.

Continued thanks to the volunteer groups who continue to devote their spare time in improving our course in many ways.
