President's Message

Hi All,

February 2020 has brought our first decent rain and the course is looking great. It also saw the reopening of the bistro (great to see you and your team back Victor) and the club filled with people again.

My thanks to Women’s President Yvonne Heslop for preparing and submitting our grant for two defibrillators which hopefully will not be required, but certainly will assist immensely should a member require the usage.

QGC have recruited a new person to the greens staff, Brendan O’Grady who some of you may know. Brendan brings skills and knowledge to enhance our current team. Please introduce yourself to Brendan and make him feel welcome.

We bid farewell to our current Club Champion Lachlan Tisma this week who is off to Canada. I am sure that you all join me in wishing him all the very best of luck and safe travels.

Special mention to:

• our “Dodgers” and their co-ordinator Ray Hart for their continued efforts which we are all very grateful.
• A Grade pennant team for defeating Royal Canberra and remaining in the hunt for finals
• Freddy Stanborough for his can-do attitude and unlimited skills to fix/maintain/repair anything we throw at him.
• Our new Captain Josh Crockett who has done a great job stepping into the role, is still on the hunt for Match Committee members. If anyone is interested, please contact him.

I have communicated with QPRC and State government officials re: the status of;

• Brown St Closure, which is pending approval of bollards that are to be placed at the end of Dodsworth St, before we can commence the infill of the road and turfing
• The grant application process has been delayed, and we have been advised that updates are due at the end of March.
• Kangaroo Control – possible participation in study by Uni of NSW
• Tree Management

This month we have the Queanbeyan Pro Am tournament, from 16th – 17th March 2020.

Come and watch James Nitties, Matt Millar, Jack Wilson and our very own Jake Nagle in the 9-hole Invitational Skins on Sunday 15th March from 4.00pm, then join us in the club for a presentation and chat with the players afterwards.

Monday 16 and Tuesday 17 March will be shotgun starts morning and afternoon, with a presentation and shootout on the 18th green on the Tuesday after the completion of play.

Lock in the dates and your continued support of this event is appreciated. Promotion of this event with your friends will assist in making full fields the order of the day.

Preparation is underway for the 2020 Australian Boys Interstate Series, to be held from Monday April 20th to Thursday April 23rd

We have been provided with the finalised format and requirements for the event, and we will be calling for volunteers in the next few weeks. An information night will be scheduled for prospective volunteers this month. Tony will have more information contained in his CEO report.

Captain's Report

Hello all,

Pennant Season is now well underway with some mixed results in all grades.

A Grade had a great win over Royal Canberra last weekend 3.5 - 2.5 at Federal GC. This has now put them in 4th position in a very close competition.

A Reserve are currently in 5th place only a win out of the top 4. Hopefully some big results can go their way.

I have had some complaints over the last few weeks with issues of slow play, please try and follow the following guidelines as best as possible;

Player Conduct and Spirit of the Game

It is one of the central principles of the game of golf that players play by the Rules and in the spirit of the game. Rule 1.2 in the Rules of Golf details the conduct that is expected of all players and what is meant by spirit of the game.

Rule 1.2 reads as follows:

“All players are expected to play in the spirit of the game by:

· Acting with integrity – e.g. by following the Rules, applying all penalties, and being honest in all aspects of play.

· Showing consideration to others – e.g. by playing at a prompt pace, looking out for the safety of others, and not distracting the play of another player.

· Taking good care of the course – e.g. by replacing divots, smoothing bunkers, repairing ball marks, and not causing unnecessary damage to the course."

Tips from the Tour

Green Reading:
It’s important to remember that the speed of the putt can determine how much the ball will take the break. Slower greens generally take less break, as you are hitting it firmer through the first part of the putt. Quicker smoother greens will take more of the break, as the putt will be hit at a slower speed and have more time to take the break......remember this next time you have a quicker downhiller, maybe allow double the break you normally would.

CEO Update

Hello again members.

What a busy few months we have ahead of us here at Queanbeyan Golf Club!

On Monday 16th and Tuesday 17th March, we host the 2020 Queanbeyan Pro-Am. With the absolute cream of PGA professionals contesting this event, it is sure to be the pinnacle of professional golf in the ACT/Monaro region for 2020. With over 60 PGA professionals vying for the $20,000.00 in prizemoney, there is sure to be a feast of golf for everyone to enjoy.

Entry forms are currently available at the club pro-shop, the clubhouse and online at www.queanbeyangolf.com.au. Get in early for your chance to be paired with one of Australia’s top PGA professionals.

As a curtain raiser to the Pro-Am, on Sunday 15th March, beginning at 4.00pm, our hometown hero Jake Nagle, will be competing against James Nitties (ex-PGA Tour player), Matt Millar (2018 Australian PGA Player of the Year) and Jack “corrupting one golf tournament at a time” Wilson (hopefully starring Rizz the Caddy) in a nine-hole $5000.00 invitation skins tournament.

The guys will be showcasing their talents on holes 1 to 8, with a grandstand finish on a shortened 18th hole (drivable par 4 over the trees!!), much to the delight of the following crowd. Be part of the fun. Entry is free. Bring your mates, your dog (on a leash please) or your family, to be part of the fun. Walk the course WITH the players, cheer on Jake, chat to the lads between shots. It’s going to be a GREAT DAY!!!

Our drinks cart will be supplying the bevvies, and possibly a few tunes, and the bistro will be open for Sunday dinner, after the fun of the golf course moves into the clubhouse.

If that isn’t enough golf for you, then why not be part of the upcoming 2020 Australian Boys’ Interstate Team Championships, commencing on Monday 20th April? Eighty of Australia’s best junior golfing talent will converge on Queanbeyan GC to contest the Australian Team Series Championships. (Last time they were held in the ACT/Monaro region was when a youthful Jason Day led his Queensland team to victory at Gungahlin Lakes) How many players from this year’s event will go on to become a Major winner?

Women's Captain

Our Opening day for 2020 was Captain v President played over Tuesday and Saturday it was a resounding victory for the Presidents team once again. Scores 1081 v 1060
 
Monthly Medal winners for February were Joyce Hotchkis 70 nett for Tuesday and Deb Benney 68 nett for Saturday
 


Goulburn Golf Club had their open day and Pauline Jeffery was runner up with 82 gross and Liz Smyth not far behind with 84 gross.
 

Federal Golf Club had their Open day the following week with Liz Smyth coming 3rd in the gross with 85.
 
Pauline Jeffery and Pam Sassella travelled across the ditch to play in the New Zealand seniors for the week, tough competition against the kiwis with Pauline winning in the final of her division 2/1. Pauline in some games had to give 10 shots which you would have to agree has been a while giving shots in pennant. Pam got to the final but went down before the grand final in her division.
 
Following the NZ seniors was the Trans Tasman Seniors Cup event held at Lake Taupo Golf Club between the best of Australia and New Zealand. This year the Aussies were just too strong and beat the Kiwis on their home ground. The final score was 8 ½ to 3 ½ in a Ryder Cup type format. Pauline and Pam certainly contributed to the win caddying and team manager.
 
VW scramble was played with 10 Queanbeyan teams. The team of Wendy Lynch, Meg Lynch, Lauren Maher and Maureen Van Maanen had a very strong 56 winning points. Off to regional finals at Riverside Oaks this month.
 
CSGA Gala day at Yowani was very well supported with 135 players in attendance. The battle for Champion of Champions in the district was fought with Fran Miller winning Div 2. Joyce Hotchkis won 2nd nett in Div 1. Fran Miller winning 3rd nett in Div 1. Lauren Maher with 5th gross in Div 1. Deb Baker won a ntp on a very long par 3 of 165m and Liz Smyth won one of 3
