President's Message
I would like to thank all members for their support during the recent transition period in my role as acting Chairman of the Board and look forward to your continued support over the coming months as we continue to progress and improve both the club and course operations.
A draft presentation of the QGC course plan was recently provided by our consultant Envirolink and we are awaiting finalisation for presentation to all QGC members for information and comment. This plan will assist in driving a number of potential funding opportunities and outline the course works and associated program for the coming years.
A couple of key priorities from the plan are
- the upgrade of all tees to be levelled and turfed with Santa Anna couch
- 11th fairway levelling and reshaping
I recently met with QPRC representatives to discuss the possible closure of Brown Street between the first fairway, across the ninth fairway to Dodsworth St. In effect, this would still provide for vehicular access to the golf club via Booth Street, and close the vehicular access from Dodsworth Street. We have initiated the process with a formal request which will now be progressed with the assistance and support of QPRC.
Our volunteers continue to provide valued assistance around the course and club that is greatly appreciated by us all. Fantastic effort everyone.
I would also like to mention the resignation of Daniel Goodchild from the Board due to business and family commitments. “Goody” has provided outstanding service on the Board, Greens committee, sponsorship and general assistance when required and will be sorely missed. Thanks for all your efforts Goody.
June is the month for an early membership payment opportunity to be in the draw for the golf package displayed in the club and I encourage all members to take advantage of this opportunity.
June is also the start of winter with less daylight and warm temperatures to play. Please all consider this and keep up with the group in front to avoid slow play.
Yours in Golf
Vice President and acting Chairman
John Bull

CEO Update
Hello again members!
Writing to you this month from the conference rooms, overlooking the beautiful landscaped gardens of The Royal Sydney Golf Club. “What are you doing there?” I hear you ask ……
As part of the Board of Management of QGC’s commitment to becoming the region’s preeminent golfing facility, the Board of Directors have supported my attendance at a week-long conference at Royal Sydney (sadly, no “on-course” golfing content), co-facilitated by Golf Australia, Golf Management Australia (GMA), and the Club Managers Association of America (CMAA).
The conference has been a resounding success, and is easily the best conference I have been to in my 30+ years in the club industry! With 41 delegates (mostly General Managers) from clubs all over Australia, the networking opportunities were almost worth the price of admission alone.
With topics covering; Governance, Strategic Planning, Leadership, Team Dynamics, Technology, Industry Trends and the like, the conference covered all aspects of modern club management, and tackled quite a number of case studies. The content was applicable to the real world, and Queanbeyan Golf Club will definitely be the beneficiary of the information received, as well as the ongoing benefit of striking and maintaining networks within the greater golf club management network.
Closer to home, the membership renewals have been coming in thick and fast (thank you), and should remain so at least until the end of June, when the “Earlybird Membership Promotion” finishes. For those who don’t renew in June, you still have until the end of July to have your membership subscriptions paid.
Membership renewals can be transacted either at Reception or online via our website. If you require assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us. Members who wish to discuss the varying membership categories available, are encouraged to contact me personally on 0409 765 790 at any time, to ensure we can offer you a category of membership that suits you, and your lifestyle.
June is also a busy month for Sponsorship and Corporate/Business renewals. Why not add a Tee Sponsorship as part of this upcoming year’s inclusions? Tee Sponsorship ranges from $1000.00 to $1500.00 per annum, depending on location. (see example below)
If you are interested in becoming a Tee Sponsor, please contact me ASAP, as spots are dwindling very quickly!!!
Until next time. Good golfing, and may the breeze be at your back, and every putt be your last.

Women's Captain
After a very successful Queanbeyan Women's Open Day we are now heading towards the 2nd half of the year.
Four of the women went to Echuca to play the NSW Seniors at Rich River, Deb Baker, Pauline Jeffery, Pam Sassella and Fran Miller. We all made the semi's, 3 of us went through to the final. Pauline Jeffery lost to Maggie Hayes from Bermagui 5/4 and Pam Sassella and Fran Miller went to the 20th hole for Pam to win 1 up. A good battle was had in very good spirits ( maybe a few too many from the night before). Someone suggested that "those small people on a golf course are always a hazard" no truer words have been said. Deb Baker won the nett on Day 1.
BRUCE is back, Queanbeyan won the final 4.5 to .5 against Federal. There were good battles between the players. Final team was Amber Thornton, Lauren Maher, Pauline Jeffery, Candice Thompson and Cathryn Husdell. Wendy Lynch and Louise Smith caddied on the day but certainly helped get the team to the final as well throughout the season.
For those not familiar with the Bruce Cup here is a succinct explanation -
It is the trophy donated to our district in 1928 by the wife of the then Prime Minister Stanley Bruce. In 1973 it was repurposed for the district Women’s A grade scratch pennant. Queanbeyan has won it 33 times in those 47 years. An outstanding achievement you would have to agree.
Final pennant matches to be played for the year are Emily Hurt. Our first match was squared against Yass. If you are available to caddy please let Captain Pam know.
Congratulations to Amber Thornton and Candice Thompson with 121 gross winning the Foursomes with runners up Wendy Lynch and Pauline Jeffery with 124 gross winning the nett as well . A fun day with everyone still remaining friends, I think.
Congratulations Amber Thornton and Georgie Oke for their contribution in the winning Junior Pennant team.
A few of us travelled to Goulburn for their annual guest day. What a wild, wet and windy day. Pauline Jeffery with partner Gail Maloney won with 70 nett in an ambrose. Difficult conditions doesn't even come close to describing the day. Well done once again Pauline. Four of the five women attending came home with a prize.
Our guest day is Sunday 28 July, pencil the date in your diary and ask that guest. If you haven't a guest and would like to play please speak to a committee person. The cost is $50/ pair with lunch included.
Yvonne, Trish, Rhonda, Pauline and Sam played in Royal Canberra's Open Day with 3 coming away with significant prizes. Pauline Jeffery was runner up in Gross for Division 1, Rhonda Broderick won Division 2 Gross with Trish Ziebell 3rd Gross in Div 2. Sam McLintock and Yvonne Heslop winning a ball each.
Tuesdays Monthly Medal winner for May played on 21 May was Michelle O’Brien with a healthy 68. Junes Saturday Monthly Medal winner was Pauline Jeffery with an outstanding 72 nett/77 Gross WOW! Tuesdays June Monthly Medal winner was Julie Meskell with another outstanding 79 under very trying conditions. Sixteen very brave women played on Tuesday, there were notable exceptions to the field, their commitment to the game was discussed. :)
Still from the Home of Bruce

Junior News
Junior Pennant Winners.
Sunday May 26th at Belconnen Magpies golf course our Queanbeyan juniors won the pennant grand final against Yowani GC, the match was the perfect ending to a very long season. With the 2 teams tied up 3 all Patrick Mitchell had to play extra holes to win the final point for a 4 & 3 result. As this was the last pennant season for most of the team (turning 18 years old) proved a fitting way to finish as a junior. The team will represent the ACT Monaro region in the State Junior Pennant Shield which will be played later this year. A very big thankyou to Grant Jones from DJ Homes who has over the years sponsored the team to 2 grand final victories.

Sand Buckets
This has improved so thanks to all the golfers.
We have 2 designated areas, near the 8th tee and at the back of the 18th green to put the Sand Buckets after you have finished your round? Invariably a large percentage of them are left full. Let's make an effort to:
A) put them in the designated area after each round, and
B) empty them on your last hole that you play as I am sure there are plenty of opportunities to do so.
Divot Boxes
Lets make an effort over the winter months on Holes 5, 6, 8, 12, 15 and 17 to fill in divots made. If you are playing with someone and they take a divot and don’t fix it, Can you either fix the divot with the sand and seed mix or nicely suggest that they do so.
Can please make sure you keep the lid closed after use as this stops the seed from germinating inside the box.

Hoops and Ropes
As golfers we can do with some improvement in this area. If you see hoops or ropes down it would be appreciated if you could take the time to put them back to protect these areas.
It would be great if and when you need to move a rope, hoop or sign that you replace it to its original position.
The Greens staff place these hoops, ropes and signs periodically around the course to protect new work and regenerate worn areas.
