President's Message

Hi All,

The draft QGC course plan has been provided by our consultant Envirolink. This plan will now be displayed in the club for information whilst it is under review and in the finalisation process.

The key priorities from the plan remain:

• the upgrade of all tees to be levelled and turfed with Santa Anna couch
• 11th fairway levelling and reshaping
• closure of Brown St (to be voted on at the QPRC July meeting)

We are scheduled to meet the Deputy Premier Mr Barilaro this month and look forward to his continued support in maintaining the further development of our Golf Club and course.

As you are aware, we have had a couple of recent resignations from the Board. I am pleased to announce that Jordan De Smet will join the Board as a casual appointee. Jordie brings a wealth of knowledge from both his professional and golfing backgrounds as well as a passion for the continued development of QGC. I thank Jordie for his interest and look forward to his inputs and participation effective immediately.

Thankyou to all members for taking the early bird membership option which is greatly appreciated by us all.

The concrete steps on 1 and 10 look fantastic and provide a much safer option, thankyou Ray Hart, Freddie Stanborough, Glen Hart and Ian O’Donnell for all your hard work and apologies if I had missed anyone. The sales of VB will be down for a couple of weeks as Freddie goes on holidays.

Sunday numbers have been down of late and it presents a great opportunity to invite your friends to come and play our fantastic course. Please participate where possible.

The winter has certainly arrived and in July the only major event in our golfing calendar is the Final of Matchplay Championship to be played on Saturday 13th

In A Grade Anthony De Jongh will be playing his third successive final, this time against Tasi Lolesio. In 2018 he defeated Tasi but lost to Trent Britton in 2017. B Grade will be between Damien Bowles and Len Holdsworth. C Grade will be Anthony Wrate to play John Doyle.

August will be the start of our new accounting year and players are advised that there will be a $1 increase in competition fee. Voucher prizes will increase 36c per player, GST will have to be covered and the balance to the club for expenses relating to golf and course.

The August monthly medal round will be “DoingItForJarrod” day. Promotional material should arrive soon for this fund raising day for Kids with Cancer.

Moving to the beginning of spring we remind all that on Saturday 7th September we will have a special day to remember Wal Harrison. Fiona Harrison has donated a prize for the best nett score of the day.

The winning pairs in all three of the 2 person Ambrose events will be competing in Regional Finals with Queanbeyan hosting on Sunday 20th October. Players will be advised of alternative courses if this date does not suit.

Looking at the Past
While looking through some older paperwork for historical information for DGA website I found something for all of those who turn away from four ball events.

In 1992 in the second qualifying round in 4BBB for Matchplay Championship the total number of players on that day was 212, yes that’s correct 212 players. A lot of familiar names are still playing, the winning pair had 51 points.

Tips from the Tour

A big thankyou to all our members who attended the chipping and putting clinics held by Mat and Jake during June, we hope you all learnt a thing or two. Keep an eye out in future newsletters and Pro Shop email for more of these to come!!!

Also, a friendly reminder to members that any Pro Shop credit must be cleared after a 12 month period. Check with us in the shop to see what you may have expiring soon.

CEO Update

Hello again members.

That time of the year again. Subscription renewal time!

A huge thank you to all of the 88 members who took advantage of the “Earlybird” promotion, by renewing their golfing membership during the month of June. Congratulations to Stephen Clyde-Smith, who won the fantastic golfing package, which was on display in the clubhouse for the duration of the promotion. A HUGE thank you also to our newly acquired and renewing club sponsors, many of whom upgraded their annual commitment to include one of our brand-new tee signs (due to be “planted” over the next week or so). Members are encouraged to support our sponsors as much as possible, so please mention that you are a QGC member when you make the call.

A courteous reminder that membership fees are due and payable prior to 31st July 2019. Cash payments can be made during normal office hours (see notices around the club for further details), or you can choose to complete your renewal notice, provide your card payment particulars, and place your completed form in the box at Reception, hand it to the bar staff, or scan and email it to admin@queanbeyangolf.com.au.

Members who may need assistance in determining which category of membership best suits them, are invited to contact me at the Club at any time, to discuss the wide variety of options available to continue your golfing enjoyment of QGC. (Please also remember that “Pay As You Golf” is provided as a monthly payment option. Please contact the Club if you require any further information in this regard)

Please also be reminded that your membership card loyalty points MUST be used prior to 31st July 2019, as the Club undertakes its annual purge in preparation for the new financial year which commences on 1st August 2019.

THE MORE YOU PLAY, THE MORE YOU WIN!!
Golfing members are hereby advised that the Board has recently resolved to increase competition fees from $12.00 to $13.00 per round, effective from 1st August 2019. This $1.00 increase (8.3%) provides for a very generous 16.8% increase in the prize pool for each competition.

GOODBYE JIMMY, HELLO TOM!!
Farewell and good luck to our highly respected and much-loved Assistant Superintendent Jimmy Maher, who leaves us on 11th July to pursue interests outside of golf course greenkeeping. On behalf of the Board and management, we thank Jimmy for his dedication, skill and hard work over the past 3 ½ years and wish he, Lauren and family the very best for the future.

Commencing his duties a few days prior to Jimmy leaving, we welcome Tom Griffin to the role of Senior Greenkeeper. Tom is a Queanbeyan local (lives just a few doors down from his new co-worker Jamie), and joins us from his most recent position at Royal Canberra GC. Tom brings a wealth of turf management experience to Queanbeyan GC, not the least of which includes stints at venues such as The Old Course at St Andrews, Jack’s Point GC in New Zealand, as well as tending to the lawn courts of The All England Tennis Club at Wimbledon. Please join me in welcoming Tom to our team, and taking time to have a chat with him when you cross his path on the course.

Superintendent's Update

Winter has well and truly arrived. The regular early starters brave the frosty conditions, with afternoon players generally greeted with perfect playing conditions. I hope the mild winter continues and with some blossom on some trees, we may have an early Spring. Lets hope so.

The volunteer groups continue on their way to improve the course in many areas. The ladies have the gardens looking great and the men have completed the steps on the 1^st and 11^th tees. Your efforts are  greatly appreciated by the staff and members. Keep up the good work. Well done.

The blue painted lines you’ll notice near the bunker edges are marked as an entry point to each bunker and for the rake to be positioned there after playing your shot and raking. Please get used to this and be mindful of others playing behind you and rake bunkers accordingly.

For those that are unaware, Jimmy Maher has resigned as an employee of our club. Jim has been at our club for nearly 4 years and has provided professional and passionate assistance in every regard. We all wish Jimmy every success in his new venture and look forward to him playing golf more regularly and relaxed. Sincerely, Jimmy, thank you, congratulations on your efforts and achievements with best wishes for your future.

Junior Pennant
The junior pennant team will have the opportunity to play in the Interstate Junior series in the next few months. The first match will be played against the winner of the Riverina region at a neutral venue before the 30th of September, the next match will be played against the south coast region and then off to Newcastle for the final series.

Junior week of golf
Monday 15th July the winter junior week of golf will be played over 4 days, first at Murrumbidgee GC, Tuesday at Belconnen Magpies, Wednesday off to Yass, then Thursday at Federal GC.

Cost: 4-Day Tournament $70 or $20 daily entry

Men’s Match Play
Saturday 29th June was the semi-finals of the men’s match play, Harry Smith had made it through by defeating Josh Crockett 7&5 the week before. The 2 match play semi-finals were Harry versus Tasi Lolesio and Anthony De Jongh versus Lachlan Tisma. Harry and Tasi had a tight match through 18 holes with Tasi the eventual winner playing an extra hole. The Final will be played between Anthony De Jongh (who defeated Lachlan Tisma) and Tasi Lolesio. Well done to Harry who also shot for the first time 1 under par 69 the Sunday before.

Sand Buckets

While it was getting better our golfing members seem to have slipped back into old habits.
We have 2 designated areas, near the 8th tee and at the back of the 18th green to put the Sand Buckets after you have finished your round?  Invariably a large percentage of them are left full.  Let's make an effort to:
A) put them in the designated area after each round, and
B) empty them on your last hole that you play as I am sure there are plenty of opportunities to do so. 

Divot Boxes

We could definitely improve in this area as well. Holes 5, 6, 8, 12, 15 and 17 are where we have Divot Boxes placed  to fill in divots made.

If you are playing with someone and they take a divot and don’t fix it, Can you either fix the divot with the sand and seed mix or nicely suggest that they do so. 

Can please make sure you keep the lid closed after use as this stops the seed from germinating inside the box.

• Sunday afternoons at 1.45pm for a 2.00pm. No experience needed. No need to book.
• Play 8 holes in an all Beginner Women’s Comp. Cost only $10. Meet and pay at the Pro Shop.
• You will learn about golf in a friendly and non-threatening environment with help to enjoy the game at whatever level you would like.
• If you are only available on another weekday and would like to give golf a go then phone Pauline (see below) and see what can be arranged.
• Professional lessons available from Jake Nagle and his team at the Pro Shop. Ph. 6297 2542. Check for Ladies clinics and packages at affordable prices.
• Membership for women available in all categories. Get a handicap and play in the Women’s competition on Tuesday, Saturday and medley Sundays.
