President's Message

Hi All,

Thank you to all those who attended the AGM and contributed to the acceptance of our financial statements and annual reports. I trust that you have all read them to see how well the club is actually going.

I also would like to thank our departing Board members Gail Goiser, Lee Maiden, Ray Dorsett and Jerry Smith for their significant contributions towards our successful 2019 and wish them well in their future endeavours.

We required an election for new Board members due to the fact that we had 7 outstanding nominations for the 6 available positions. The election process was run by our Returning Officer Dave Elton and I thank him for his efforts and time

The result as you all are aware meant that there was 1 person to miss out and that was Sue Korth who I have thanked personally for her nomination and look forward to her continuous support.

I welcome all incoming/exisiting Board Members and look forward to working with you all in maintaining the positive momentum and progression of Queanbeyan Golf Club in 2020.

CEO Update

Hello again members.

With Christmas just around the corner, and still plenty of last-minute trips to the shops, there are a few dates that everyone needs to jot down in your diaries.

First off the rank, the Club and the golf course are both closed on Christmas Day (Wednesday 25th December). Merry Xmas everybody!!!!!

Victor and his hard-working Bistro staff will also be enjoying a well-deserved break over the festive season. They will be serving lunch only on Christmas Eve (Tuesday 24th December 2019), and will re-open in time for lunch on Thursday 2nd January 2020. Have a nice and relaxing break guys, you thoroughly deserve it!!!!

In terms of what’s on over the Chrissy break, the clubhouse will be trading relatively as normal. Closing times may vary due to the level of trade, and also due to the fact that the kitchen will be closed for dinner. (If you are contemplating a late evening drink, maybe call ahead first to avoid disappointment)

Jake and the lads in the Pro-Shop have got pro-comp’s on almost every day (except Xmas Day), so there’s no excuse to stay home and listen to grandpa snoring, or Uncle Dave’s annual contribution to politics, religion and climate change.

Due to overwhelming popular demand, we have decided to move our acoustic entertainer from Sunday afternoon at 4pm, to Friday nights at 7pm. Sadly, these fantastically talented singers and musicians were getting baked by the hot, westerly sun on the balcony, so we’ve decided to bring them inside where it’s nice and cool. So, why not bring your friends and your family and make Friday nights YOUR night out at the golfie!!!

From my family to all of yours, please have a very merry Christmas, and a safe, happy and prosperous New Year.

As always ….. may the breeze be at your back, and every putt be your last!!!

Women's Captain

Since our last newsletter, our 2019 Club Champion, Lauren Maher, broke the course record on Saturday 2 November with a brilliant 68 gross, which was only recently broken in July by Amber Thornton with a 69. Some of us can only dream of such achievements.

The ACT Seniors event was held at Gold Creek, Federal and of course our very own Queanbeyan Golf Club. The Colleen de Costa trophy was won by Jacqui Morgan from Monash Golf Club. Pam Sasssella won the nett at Queanbeyan, Deb Baker won the nett the next day at Gold Creek and Liz Smyth was the winner of the gross at Federal. Pauline Jeffery came 3rd in the 54 hole gross.

Our Queanbeyan Cup on Saturday 16 November was won by Cathryn Husdell with gross of 80 including an eagle on the 4th, Lorraine Greenwood won the nett with a very nice 67.

The Mixed Foursomes was won by Pauline Jeffery and Matt Doyle with a 6 shot lead from Julie Reid and Stephen Dwight. The nett winners were Julie and Ian Seaman with only ¾ of a shot from Meg Lynch and James Brown.

Our CSGA district gala day at Fairbairn Golf Course was 'a day at the races' it was fun to see all  the women getting into the spirit of things. Wendy Lynch and Catherine Husdell won the gross with 85 followed hot on their heels by Pauline Jeffery and Fran
Miller.

The Women's AGM on Monday 18 November welcomed 2 new committee members Kerry Smith and Deb Shand. Outgoing President and Vice President were Linley Huish and Pauline Jeffery. Thank you once again for all your efforts. We members often don't see the hard work that goes on behind the scenes.  Yvonne Heslop will now be President, Deb Shand Vice President, Jacqui McMillan Treasurer/Secretary the other positions have remained the same.

Our ever travelling senior Deb Baker attended the Tasmania senior Matchplay and was runner up in the nett. Certainly gets around our Deb.

The Womens presentation night was another great success thanks to the committee, congratulations to all the winners and everyone who played throughout the year without you it wouldn't have been such a success. The Clubwoman of the Year was a very deserving Aina Blyton, many thanks especially in recent times for mentoring on the 10th during our Championships.

After our final day for the year on 7 December we will revert to a pro comp so no women's presentations and all cards please put in the slot below notice board at the entrance to the club. Our first days back for 2020 are Tuesday 4th and Saturday 8th February.

Last but certainly not least the women would like to thank the green staff for all their work keeping the course looking so good in very trying conditions, the bar staff in always having a smile together with helping hands, Jake Nagle our very competent pro who is always the women's go to for any information regarding the club or course and the women's committee who do a lot of work in front and behind the scenes.

Wishing everyone a very Merry and Safe Xmas and bring on a fantabulous 2020.

From the Home of Bruce

Years 7 and 8 of the Googong Anglican High School started a golf program with Jack Newton Junior Golf which ran from October 15th to the 3rd December with Trent Britton Queanbeyan Golf Clubs trainee professional hosting clinics twice a week at the oval next to the school. The morning of December 3rd the school’s students came to Queanbeyan GC for the final clinic with Trent with his assistant Harry Smith utilizing the driving range for hitting long balls, chipping, putting and bunker practice. Hopefully some of the students take the next step and start playing on a regular basis.

Sand Buckets

How good are we getting at this?  Really good.
We have 2 designated areas, near the 8th tee and at the back of the 18th green to put the Sand Buckets after you have finished your round?  Invariably a large percentage of them are left full.  Let's make an effort to:
A) put them in the designated area after each round, and
B) empty them on your last hole that you play as I am sure there are plenty of opportunities to do so.

Divot Boxes

With the new couched tees it is very important that we fill in divots made on the Tees as the couch is a "running grass" and grows best on level ground.

If you are playing with someone and they take a divot and don’t fix it, Can you either fix the divot with the sand provided in the Divot Boxes or nicely suggest that they do so.

Practicing on the Course

Just a reminder to golfers that we have practice facilities and that the golf  course is not a place for a myriad of balls.  A member was seen practicing with his "shag bag" of balls this week.  please refrain from doing this and keep your practice to 2 balls whilst on the course

Membership

A reminder to all Clubhouse and Golfing members that memberships that have not been renewed will need to ASAP to use the Golf Club facilities - unless your Clubhouse Membership is through until 2020 or 2021.

Superintendent's Report

The current drought  we are experiencing is putting us all to the test. Irrigation during this period has been constant with additional areas being watered during the day. Whilst it may seem wet at times, it takes very little time to dry out, consistently high winds has made our job more difficult. Lets hope we receive some relieving rain soon. With the extremely hot weather of late, moisture content in the ground is at a minimum, native trees are stressed and others dying. In the last 3 weeks several large limbs have fallen. I urge that even on extremely hot days, avoid walking in the shade and the tree line. There are no "warning signs" and consider your own safety when enjoying playing golf.

The Greenstaff wish all members a happy and safe Christmas and look forward to seeing you all again in 2020.
