April 2019

The Captain's Desk

Pennant   For a number of our teams the 2019 pennant season is now over but all players are thanked for their efforts and time given. A Grade and Handicap teams both finished at end of preliminary rounds.

A Reserve played in quarter final against top of division Royal Canberra with the games a lot closer than predicted and unfortunately going down 4 matches to 3. Thank you again to all players and better luck in 2020.

Juniors with just one round to play before finals our team is still in first place on count back from Federal the team they squared against on Sunday.  The last game will be against fourth placed Royal Canberra who sits just one point behind. This last round will not be played until 28th April. Semi Finals for this division will be 19th May and Grand Final 26th May.

Masters Scratch team finished preliminary rounds with a nice win on Thursday 4 April against Murrumbidgee but unfortunately their season is also over.

Masters Handicap after the preliminary rounds concluded on Thursday 4th April the team cemented their top position and defeated the Capital team on Thursday 11th April in the quarter final. Semi Finals for this Grade will be played on Thursday 18th April and hopefully they progress to the Grand Final. Good luck to our team.

4BBB Matchplay Top qualifying pair, Mark Brunello and Nicholas Whennan were beaten in first round by eighth seeds Chaz White and John Cole. Chaz and John will play Matt Doyle and James Brown in second round. Other first matches are still to be completed.

Brighton Lakes visit on Saturday and Sunday 30th and 31st March whilst a great victory for our team, the cold change, wind and some rain certainly made conditions tough.

Reminders for April and May
Final Handiskins - Saturday 13th April
Easter Saturday – Australian 3 Person Ambrose
Maximum score Stroke – Sunday 28 April – for those who would like to play stroke but avoid playing because of the fear of an extremely bad hole.
Qualifying round for Matchplay Championships will be on Saturday 4th May and a reminder that A Grade match rounds will be top 16 and B and C Grade will be top 8.
The 27 hole Foursomes Championships for both men and women will be Saturday 25th May.

CEO Update

Hello again members.

This month’s newsletter comes hot on the heels of yet another highly acclaimed tournament. This time the Queanbeyan Golf Club Ladbrokes Pro-Am.

Jake has plenty of detail in his column, regarding the sponsors, supporters and results of this fantastic 2-day event, however I would like to take a few minutes to give ourselves a big pat on the back. And by ourselves, I mean, ALL OF US!!

The members, volunteers, staff, committee members and contractors, put in a massive combined effort to keep our wonderful golf course and club at the pointy end of golf clubs in this region.

In the last month or so, there have been over 200 professional golfers play our course, and to a man and woman, everybody has been gob smacked at the quality of Queanbeyan Golf Club, both on and off the course. My inbox is full of thank you emails from the ladies of the European Tour, and from the lads who played here this week in the Pro-Am.

Members should be justifiably proud of our club, and the position we now hold amongst our peers. (It is not a coincidence that the number of visiting golfers from our better known “interstate cousins” has increased now that the word has got out!)

Along with our new found profile, comes the responsibility to match or better, the amenities and services that our competitors offer. In short, we need to “keep ahead of the game”! That is why the club has chosen ClubCar to supply us with six new state of the art Lithium Ion electric carts. These were delivered a few weeks ago, and we are only the third club in Australia to take delivery of this latest model. So book yourself a drive, to see what all the fuss is about!!!

The club is also in the initial stages of remodeling our tee signage. (Most of you will agree that our current offerings are well past their prime!) We have engaged a brilliant young company, to create our new course signage, and we are very excited to see how our concepts work out. To give you a sneak peak, their portfolio can be viewed at https://www.aconcept4.com.au/tee-signs

Any members who wish to have their business promoted on our new signs, are urged to contact me at your earliest possible opportunity, to avoid disappointment. There are only 18 chances available, so get in early.

Have a very happy and safe Easter everyone.

Also looking forward to seeing you on the steps of the Australian War Memorial at dawn on ANZAC Day. Lest We Forget.

As always ….. may the breeze be at your back, and every putt be your last!!!

Women's Captain

Some well deserved down time after the NSW Women's Open but the women are still competing and representing Queanbeyan Golf Club.  Sue Korth recently competed in the Drummonds National at King Island, unfortunately didn't fare so well with some tough competition and conditions. Sue likened King Islands conditions to Barnbougle on steroids.

Julie McDonnell had a Hole in 1 ️ on the 8th on 19 March. Joining a club of a select few.
Two women's teams went to Riverside Oaks for the VW Scramble state final. Joyce Hotchkiss, Candice Thompson, Amber Thornton and Lorraine Greenwood and the other team was Sue de Sousa, Pauline Jeffery, Cathryn Husdell and Fran Miller who were runners up by .8.

Pennant season has begun and Bruce are doing very well. Plate unfortunately not faring so well this year. Bronze definitely on track and Brindabella with only 5 games in their pool haven't performed as well as they would like either.  All scores and point tables on the CSGA  website along with calendar of events throughout the year. Familiarise yourself with the website (csga.asn.au) and don't forget to Like and Follow their Facebook page so you can get all the updates in our district.

Deb Baker was one of two women selected in the ADF v GA down at Mornington Peninsula with the ADF team being victorious over Golf Australia.

The women supported the breast cancer charity on Tuesday 2 April and Saturday 6 April with pink everywhere with an amount of $349. Thank you to the men on Saturday who also dug deep and contributed.

We have our annual Women's Open Day supported by Lennock Jaguar Motors on Thursday 9 May.  First player to get a hole-in=one on the 8th will win a Jaguaur car. What a great potential reward for a $30 entry fee. Thank you once again to George Miklas from Lennock Jaguar Motors and Wendy Lynch for organising this.

Congratulations to Amber Thornton who has been selected in the combined (ACT/Tas/NT) team to play in the Australian Girls’ Interstate Championships in Toowoomba 15-17 April.   This event is preceded by the Australian Junior Championships  on the Gold Coast 10-12 April in which she will also play.

Superintendent's Report

The past month has been a particularly busy time for the Club. The success of recent events, the NSW Women’s Open and the Pro Am, have provided major recognition of our club to others, both locally and internationally. The efforts of all involved are immensely appreciated, and look forward to some groups continuing their service to the club in maintaining and improving their different areas of expertise.  Without the assistance of those dedicated people, our achievements could not have been realised.

Our small on course team of Jimmy, Jamie, Leigh and Paul have risen to the occasion in their tireless efforts over an 8 month period and I am extremely proud of their dedication, professionalism, and ultimately, their achievements.

There is still a lot to do in maintaining our club at a level we expect, and improving what we have for all to benefit.

For now though, its time to take some well earned time off and resurrect our family and social lives.

Once again, thank you from BK, Jimmy and Jamie

Junior News

Junior Pennant

The juniors have 1 regular season round to go on April 28th; their opponents will be Royal Canberra and the venue at Gold Creek. Currently the ladder has Queanbeyan sitting on top ocb from Federal with Gungahlin Lakes and Royal Canberra 1 table point behind, with such a closely contended season could see a tough battle in the semi-finals on the 19th of May and the Grand-final on May 26th.

State amateur representative Golf

Amber Thornton and Harry Smith will be representing the ACT Monaro in QLD. The Australian Girls amateur will be played on the River course at Coolangatta & Tweed Heads Golf Club on April 10-12.The interstate teams matches will be at the City Golf Club in Toowoomba on April 15-17. The boys will be contesting the amateur championship at Southport Golf Club from April 10-12, the interstate teams Championship will be at Sanctuary Cove Golf and Country Club on April 15-17. We wish them both the best of luck.

Divot Boxes

With the new divot boxes on Holes 5, 6, 8, 12, 15 and 17 please make sure you keep the lid closed after use as this stops the seed from germinating inside the box.
If you are playing with someone and they take a divot and don’t fix it, Can you either fix the divot with the sand and seed mix or nicely suggest that they do so.

Sand Buckets

Can someone please explain to me why the sand buckets are left in the car park and around the club entry points when we have 2 designated areas, near the 8th tee and at the back of the 18th green to put them after you have finished your round?  Invariably a large percentage of them are left full.  Let's make an effort to:
A) put them in the designated area after each round, and
B) empty them on your last hole that you play as I am sure there are plenty of opportunities to do so.
Thanks

Junior Clinics

The 1st clinic for 2019 was held on the 6th of February 2019

When: 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month during School Terms
Time: 4pm for approximately 45 minutes.
Cost: $10 per clinic

How to book: Just call the pro shop on 6297 2542 on the morning to confirm you child's attendance.

Hoops and Ropes

As golfers we can do with some improvement in this area.  If you see hoops or ropes down it would be appreciated if you could take the time to put them back to protect these areas.

It would be great if and when you need to move a rope, hoop or sign that you replace it to its original position.

The Greens staff place these hoops, ropes and signs periodically around the course to protect new work and regenerate worn areas.
